Panasonic TH-42PX50U 42-Inch Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV Specifications

Panasonic's 42-inch TH-42PX50U takes TV viewing to new heights--and big-screen cabinet sizes to ever-smaller proportion. The 1,024 x 768-pixel gas-plasma TV offers a 16:9 widescreen dimension to match the aspect ratio of your favorite feature films and an HDMI input for direct-digital connection with high-definition sources. Not that you necessarily need them--the set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

The set's authorized CableCARD port means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box. You'll enjoy plug-and-play convenience wherever you are.

A plasma screen renders vivid colors like you've never seen before (as in, up to 8.85 billion in this case), extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the TH-42PX50U is a mere 3.8 inches deep, one of the slimmest plasmas around--perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. The TH-42PX50U's contrast ratio is rated at an extraordinarily lifelike 3,000:1.

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) offers uncompressed digital data transmission between compatible devices, as between the TH-42PX50U and a DTV satellite receiver. Other connections include dual HD component-video inputs, 2 each composite- and S-video inputs, and a set of composite-video-based AV outputs simplifies hookup with an external AV receiver and speaker system.

The TV's internal stereo speakers are powered by 8 watts per channel. Special surround processing creates spacious 3D effects from stereo speakers and a selectable audio leveler automatically adjusts the volume level on your TV to prevent wide variations in sound between different TV stations and types of programming.

Other features include V-Chip Program lockout, on/off sleep timers, a remote control, and closed-caption decoding.

What's in the Box
TV, remote control, remote batteries (2 AA), a pedestal base, an AC power cord, F-type coaxial antenna adapters, ferrite cores, 2 clampers, a warranty card, a customer card, and a service-center list.

This 4.5-inch thin plasma TV can also be wall-mounting with an optional kit.

Designated as an EDTV, the TH-42PD50U displays signals in 480-line progressive (480p) mode, and can also accept 480p signals from video sources such as progressive-scan DVD players. While an EDTV doesn't have enough pixels for a true high-definition resolution, the difference is surprisingly small. Other features include a Progressive Scan Doubler, which upconverts analog signals to 480p, onscreen program guide for digital TV stations, 853 x 480 native resolution, and 160-degree viewing angle.

It has two built-in stereo speakers for 16 watts of total power (8 watts per speaker) that can produce virtual surround sound. It features the following video and audio connections:

Check Out Hewlett-Packard LC2640N 26" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV

Hewlett-Packard LC2640N 26" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV Review

Hewlett-Packard LC2640N 26" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV Feature

  • 26-inch HD-ready LCD television with widescreen aspect ratio; 16.6 x 20.6 x 8.5 inches (W x H x D) with stand
  • DVI-D digital-video input with HDCP, 2 HD component-video inputs, 1 PC input
  • 1,280 x 768 pixel resolution; accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and full 1080i high-definition inputs
  • Acclaimed DCDi algorithm detects low-angle lines and smoothes out staircases and jagged edges for seamless, razor-sharp images
  • 2 speakers with 7.5 watts per channel and SRS WOW, BBE ViVA, and TruBass sound modes

Hewlett-Packard LC2640N 26" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV Overview

Hewlett-Packards new introduction to Televisions feature this 26" HDTV-Ready LCD Flat Panel model with resolution of 1280-768 pixels and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratios. It incorporates HP's Vidual Fidelity System picture processing technology and Faroudja's DCDi de-interlacing chip to scale images to meet display requirements with minimum picture artifacts. HP says its VFS will analyze all pixels for noise reduction, motion compensation, color enhancement to deliver a sharp picture. The LC2640N also features dual NTSC tuners and side-by-side picture-in-picture function. Panel inputs include DVI-D with HDCP and HD component video. BBE Viva and SRS WOW sound processing technologies enhance audio. Comes in black finish and includes matching table stand. Wall mounting brackets and subwoofer are optimal.

Hewlett-Packard LC2640N 26" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV Specifications

HP's LC2640N is a high-definition-ready flat-panel LCD TV capable of serving both your living room and your office. The 26-inch, widescreen set offers 1,280 x 768 resolution and renders crisp, dynamic, true-to-life images using HP Visual Fidelity picture-processing technology, capable of enhancing virtually any video source. Integrated dual NTSC tuners give you picture-in-picture or side-by-side viewing of 2 programs (or 1 program and 1 input) simultaneously, while a rear-panel PC input lets the set double as a computer monitor.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio).

The LC2640N's image enhancements include DCDi video processing by Faroudja (the acclaimed DCDi algorithm detects low-angle lines and smoothes out staircases and jagged edges, bringing greater realism to sporting events and movies), a Cross Color Suppressor (which removes cross-color artifacts from composite-video sources for consistently true colors), Fine Detail Enhancement (which identifies a picture's areas of fine detail, such as skin and hair, and enhances them to a more lifelike appearance), and the above-mentioned HP Visual Fidelity technology (which analyzes every pixel of every image for noise reduction, color enhancement, motion compensation, and detail enhancement to ensure a spectacular picture). Motion-adaptive noise reduction enhances the quality of standard-definition and off-air programming.

FilmMode processing with 3:2 and 2:3 pulldown accurately reproduces film-originated content from video sources. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2/2:3 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Inputs include a DVI-D terminal with HDCP (High-Definition Content Protection), which permits pure digital connections to DTV set-top boxes and DVI-enabled DVD players and PCs. The set also offers 2 HD component-video inputs, a VGA computer input, an RF antenna/coaxial input, and 2 each composite- and S-video connections for additional component hookups. A composite-video-based audio/video output lets you feed a TV signal to a DVR, VCR, or other device--perfect for recording one program while watching another using the set's 2 tuners. A dedicated subwoofer output lets you use an outboard powered subwoofer to augment the TV's speakers with full low-frequency response.

A pair of selectable features enhances the set's 15-watt (7.5 watts per channel x 2) sound system. BBE High Definition Audio improves speech intelligibility and musical realism, while SRS WOW/TruBass processing creates a perceptually larger sound field, enhancing vocals and instilling a sense of deep, rich bass even without the use of a subwoofer.

What's in the Box
TV, detachable stand, a remote control, remote batteries, a quick-start guide, a user's manual, a 75-ohm RF coaxial cable, 2 speakers, 2 speaker cables, an AC power cord, and warranty information.
